Wall mounting has to be planned before the wall closes. Two measurements are set in the framing and cannot be adjusted later without opening the wall again:

• Height above the tub rim. Too low and the spout fouls the rim; too high and water splashes on the way down. The manufacturer specifies a range — follow it.
• Spout projection. How far the spout reaches out from the finished wall. It has to clear the tub rim and deliver water past the inside edge, and the finished wall thickness — tile, backer, thinset — has to be accounted for, not just the framing.

Get the finished wall thickness wrong and the spout either buries itself in the tile or stands proud on an over-long shank. Give your plumber the specification sheet, not just the model number.

Alcove and drop-in tubs against a wall, and freestanding tubs positioned close enough to a wall for the spout to reach over the rim. If the tub stands clear in the room, you want a floor-mounted filler instead. If the tub has a wide drillable deck and the wall is already finished, a deck-mounted faucet is the simpler retrofit.

How high should a wall-mounted tub faucet be installed?
It depends on the model — each manufacturer specifies a height range above the finished tub rim. Follow the specification sheet rather than a rule of thumb, because spout shape and projection vary considerably between designs.

Can I retrofit a wall-mounted tub faucet to an existing bathroom?
Only by opening the wall. The supply lines and valve body sit inside the wall cavity, so unless there is existing plumbing at the right height and projection, this is a renovation job rather than a swap. A deck-mounted faucet is the easier retrofit.

What is spout projection and why does it matter?
It is how far the spout extends from the finished wall surface. It must clear the tub rim and deliver water inside the tub. Crucially, it is measured from the finished wall — tile and backer board included — not the framing.

Does a wall-mounted tub faucet work with a freestanding tub?
Yes, if the tub is positioned close enough to the wall that the spout reaches over the rim. If it stands away from the wall as a sculptural piece, use a floor-mounted tub filler.
