This is the least forgiving fixture in the bathroom. The supply lines come up through the floor at one fixed point, and that point has to be correct relative to where the tub will finally sit — including the finished floor height, because tile or engineered wood changes the level the riser sits on.

Three things to settle before anything is poured or tiled:

• Exact tub position. Not roughly there — the actual footprint, marked on the subfloor.
• Distance from tub to filler. The spout must reach comfortably over the rim without the riser crowding the tub or being awkward to walk past.
• Finished floor height. The rough-in is set relative to the finished surface, not the subfloor.

If the concrete is already poured or the tub position is not final, a wall-mounted filler or a deck-mounted set may be the more realistic answer.

Freestanding tubs are big, and a big tub takes a long time to fill. A thermostatic valve holds the temperature you set for the whole fill even if a tap runs elsewhere in the house; a pressure-balance valve protects against scalding but lets the temperature drift. On a tub you will actually soak in, thermostatic is worth it.

What is a floor-mounted tub filler?
A tall tub faucet that rises from the floor next to a freestanding tub, rather than mounting on the tub rim or the wall. Supply lines run up through the floor inside the riser, and most models include a handheld sprayer.

Can a floor-mount tub filler be installed on a concrete slab?
Yes, but the supply lines have to be roughed into the slab before it is poured, or the slab has to be cut. This makes the tub's final position a decision you cannot defer — settle it at the framing stage.

How far from the tub should the filler be placed?
Close enough that the spout delivers water well inside the rim, far enough that the riser does not crowd the tub or block the walkway. Each model specifies a recommended distance based on its spout reach — check the spec sheet against your tub's dimensions.

Do I need a thermostatic valve for a freestanding tub?
Not strictly, but it is recommended. Large tubs take a long time to fill, and a thermostatic valve keeps the water at your set temperature throughout even if someone runs a tap elsewhere in the house.
