Look at the back of your existing sink or the counter behind it and count the holes. One hole means a single hole faucet drops straight in. Three holes spaced 4" apart is a centerset; 8" or wider is a widespread. If you have three holes and want the single-hole look, most manufacturers offer a matching deck plate — sometimes called an escutcheon — that covers the outer two.

Going the other way is harder. A three-hole sink can be converted; a one-hole sink generally cannot be drilled for more without risking the material, particularly porcelain and stone.

• Body material. Solid brass bodies resist corrosion and hold threads over decades. Zinc alloy is lighter and cheaper and does not age as well.
• Cartridge. A good ceramic disc cartridge is the difference between a faucet that still feels crisp in ten years and one that drips in two. It is also the part you will eventually replace — buying from an authorized dealer means it is still available when you need it.
• Finish process. PVD finishes bond at a molecular level and resist scratching; standard plating does not. This matters most on brushed gold, matte black and bronze.
• Aerator quality. Determines whether the stream is a soft column or a spitting spray. It is the part of the faucet you interact with most and the easiest to under-engineer.

Can I install a single hole faucet on a sink with three holes?
Yes, using a deck plate that covers the outer two holes. Most manufacturers offer one in matching finishes; some include it in the box. The reverse — fitting a three-hole faucet to a one-hole sink — usually is not possible.

What size hole does a single hole faucet need?
The standard is 1⅜ inches (35 mm), which is what virtually all sinks and countertops are drilled to. Always confirm against the specification sheet for the exact model.

Are single hole faucets easier to install?
Generally yes — one hole, one supply connection point and one mounting nut mean fewer things to seal and align than a widespread faucet, which has three separate components to connect under the counter.
