This is the decision that has to be made before the plumbing is roughed in, and it is very expensive to change afterwards.

• Deck-mounted — mounts on the tub rim or a surrounding deck. The standard choice for drop-in and alcove tubs, and the most forgiving to install.
• Wall-mounted — comes out of the wall above the tub. Keeps the deck clear and is easy to clean around, but the rough-in height and projection must be set before the wall closes up.
• Floor-mounted — a freestanding riser beside the tub. The right answer for a freestanding tub sitting away from a wall, and the one that demands the most precise rough-in: the floor penetration has to land exactly where the tub will sit.

Handshower or not. Many tub fillers include a handheld sprayer on a hose — worth having for rinsing hair, cleaning the tub and washing a dog or a child. Adding one later usually is not possible.

Valve type. Thermostatic valves hold your set temperature even when someone runs a tap elsewhere; pressure-balance valves protect against scalding but let the temperature drift. For a tub you will actually soak in, thermostatic is worth the difference.

Rough-in valve. Many faucets are sold as a trim kit only, with the valve body ordered separately. Check the product page — buying trim without the matching rough-in is the single most common ordering mistake in this category.

What is the difference between a tub filler and a bathtub faucet?
They are the same thing — tub filler usually implies a higher-flow spout, often floor-mounted for a freestanding tub, while bathtub faucet is the broader term covering deck, wall and floor mounts.

Can I use a bathroom sink faucet on a bathtub?
No. Sink faucets are flow-restricted to around 1.2 GPM and have a much shorter spout reach, so a tub would take a very long time to fill and the water would run down the inside wall. Tub fillers are engineered for far higher flow.

Do I need a separate rough-in valve?
Often yes. Many tub faucets are sold as a trim kit — the visible handles and spout — with the in-wall valve body ordered separately. The product page states what is included; ask us if it is not clear.

Which mount do I need for a freestanding tub?
If the tub sits away from the wall, a floor-mounted tub filler. If it is close to a wall you may be able to use a wall-mounted faucet. Decide before the plumbing is roughed in — the floor or wall penetration has to be positioned precisely.
