Deck mounting suits drop-in tubs set into a tiled or stone deck, alcove tubs with a wide rim, and undermount tubs. It does not suit a freestanding tub standing clear of any surface — that needs a floor-mounted filler — and it is a poor fit where the deck is too narrow to take the escutcheons comfortably.

This is where deck-mount installations go wrong. Configurations range from a single-hole filler to two-, three-, four- and five-hole Roman tub sets, where spout, handles and handshower each get their own penetration. The spread between them is fixed by the faucet, and the holes are drilled into the tub deck — stone, tile or acrylic — which is not something you want to redo.

Confirm three things before ordering: the number of holes, the centre-to-centre spread, and the deck thickness the valve is rated for. A faucet designed for a ¾" acrylic rim may not have enough threaded shank to pass through a 2" stone deck.

Many Roman tub sets include a handheld sprayer on a flexible hose. If you want one, buy it as part of the set — the diverter that switches flow between spout and handshower lives inside the valve body and cannot be added afterwards.

What is a deck-mounted tub faucet?
One that mounts on the rim of the tub or the flat deck surrounding it, with the spout and handles rising from that surface. The alternatives are wall-mounted, coming out of the wall, and floor-mounted, rising from the floor beside a freestanding tub.

How many holes does a deck-mount tub faucet need?
Anywhere from one to five, depending on the design. Single-hole fillers exist, but Roman tub sets commonly use three (spout plus two handles) or four (adding a handshower). The hole spread is fixed by the faucet, so confirm it before anything is drilled.

Can I fit a deck-mount faucet to a freestanding tub?
Only if the tub has a wide enough rim designed to be drilled, which most freestanding tubs do not. A freestanding tub away from a wall normally needs a floor-mounted tub filler.

Does the tub deck thickness matter?
Yes. The threaded shank on the valve has to pass through the deck and still leave room for the mounting hardware underneath. A faucet specified for a thin acrylic rim may not reach through a thick stone deck — check the maximum deck thickness on the spec sheet.
