Pick by how many things you want running:

• R51 — 1/2" pressure balance, Type P. One function. A single shower head, nothing else. Max 22 L/min (5.8 US gpm at 60 psi).
• R23 — 1/2" patented coaxial thermostatic/pressure balance, two outlets, up to three functions across four handle positions. The workhorse: a rain head plus a handheld. Max 24 L/min (6.3 gpm).
• R45 — 1/2" coaxial thermostatic/pressure balance, three outlets, up to five functions across six positions. For body sprays and larger systems. Max 24 L/min (6.3 gpm).
• R46 — 3/4" coaxial thermostatic/pressure balance, four outlets, six functions, with two independent temperature controls so two people can run different temperatures at once. Needs a 3/4" supply. Max 38 L/min (10 gpm).

Two more you may need alongside them:

• 1005N — 3/4" thermostatic, temperature control only. A separate volume control must be ordered with it. Shared across House of Rohl, so it is filed under ROHL.
• R20 — 1/2" volume control rough-in, for the separate volume handle in a two-control layout.

Riobel shower trim numbers run T + collection + valve number + options. The number in the middle is the rough-in:

• TXX51XX → R51
• TXX23XX or TXX44XX → R23
• TXX45XX or TXX47XX → R45
• TXX46XX → R46
• TXX13 → 1005N

So TPX2351BK is a Paradox trim on an R23 in black, and TEQ46N is an Equinox trim that needs the 3/4" R46. Once you see it, you never have to ask.

You will also see Share and No Share on trims. Share runs more than one outlet at the same time; No Share sends water to one outlet at a time through a diverter. That is a property of the valve, not the trim, so it cannot be changed later.

Type P is pressure balance. It holds temperature steady even if pressure drops by up to 50% elsewhere in the house, and it works on a well system. One outlet.

Type T is thermostatic. A paraffin-stem cartridge reacts to temperature directly, allowing presets, and it is the type recommended for body jets and multi-outlet systems.

Type T/P is Riobel's patented coaxial valve: both in one body, with the diverter built in. No separate stop valve, no separate diverter — which is why Riobel shower walls have fewer holes in the tile than most.

All three are safe, carry the limited lifetime warranty, suit new construction and homes built before 2000, and none require a direct connection back to the water heater.

• RHFS-ST — floor-mount tub filler rough with service stops.
• RHBX — floor-mount with the concrete-floor installation box, for a slab pour.
• RHTB — deck-mount tub filler.
• RH21 — wall-mount tub filler.
• RH360 — wall-mount 360° lavatory faucet rough.
• RH08WM — wall-mount two-handle widespread lavatory rough.

Riobel sells the rough and the trim separately on purpose. Your plumber can set the valve in the wall while you are still deciding on a collection and a finish, and nothing visible goes in until the end — so the finish is never sitting in a construction zone getting scratched.

Every rough also ships with a test cap. The lines can be pressure-tested and flushed without pulling the cartridge or letting debris into it, which is the usual cause of a brand-new valve running weak on one side.

Thick tile, a mortar bed or a furred-out wall can leave the rough set further back than the trim can reach. You do not need a new valve. House of Rohl makes extension kits in 3/4" and 1 1/4" depths:

• Depth. The valve's mounting range is measured to the finished wall — tile, backer and thinset included, not the studs.
• Orientation. Valves are marked for up. Fitted rotated, hot and cold invert or the trim sits crooked.
• Outlet count. A two-outlet valve cannot later feed three. Adding a body spray afterwards means opening the wall.

Which Riobel rough-in valve do I need?
By outlets: one shower head is R51; a head plus a handheld is R23; body sprays or a larger system is R45; a high-flow shower running several outlets at once is R46 in 3/4". Or read the trim code — the number in the middle is the valve.

What is the difference between the R23 and the R45?
Outlet count. R23 has two outlets and up to three functions; R45 has three outlets and up to five. Both are 1/2" coaxial thermostatic/pressure balance and both flow up to 24 L/min.

When do I need the 3/4" R46 instead of a 1/2" valve?
When several outlets run at once and you need the flow — 38 L/min rather than 24 — or when you want two independent temperature controls. It requires a 3/4" supply, so it has to be planned with the plumber.

Can I use a Riobel trim on another brand's valve?
No. Rough-in valves are manufacturer-specific castings with their own cartridge and port layout. A Riobel trim fits a Riobel valve.

My rough-in is too deep after tiling. Do I need a new valve?
No. Use a House of Rohl extension kit for the R23, R45 or R51, in 3/4" or 1 1/4".

Are Riobel valves made in Canada?
Yes. Riobel's rough-in valves are manufactured in Canada. The brand originated in Quebec and its fixtures are designed and engineered in Canada.

Do I need service stops?
They let the valve be isolated for service without shutting off the house. On the floor-mount tub filler rough they are the difference between RHFS-ST and RHFS. Worth having.
