TOTO in Canada

TOTO is the reason bidet seats went mainstream in North America, and the brand most likely to be recommended by a plumber who has had to unblock other people's toilets. The technology, in plain terms

• WASHLET — the bidet seat: warm water cleansing, a heated seat, and on most models a dryer and deodoriser. Sold as a standalone seat that fits many standard bowls, or built into an integrated unit.
• CEFIONTECT — an ultra-smooth ceramic glaze. Waste and mineral deposits have far less to grip, so the bowl stays clean with less scrubbing and less cleaning product.
• TORNADO FLUSH — angled nozzles that spin water around the bowl rather than sheeting it down. Cleaner rinse, less water, and noticeably quieter than a conventional flush.
• EWATER+ — electrolysed water misted onto the bowl and wand between uses to inhibit build-up.

Choosing between the formats

One-piece toilets have no seam between tank and bowl — nothing to leak, nothing to clean around, and a lower silhouette. They cost more and are heavier to handle.

Two-piece toilets separate tank and bowl. Less expensive, easier to carry upstairs, and simpler to replace one half of later. The seam is the trade-off.

Wall-hung bowls cantilever off a steel carrier hidden inside the wall, leaving clear floor underneath and making a small bathroom read larger. The most space-efficient format, but the carrier has to be set while the wall is still open.

Smart toilets pair a TOTO bowl with its matching WASHLET seat, with the water supply concealed inside the bowl, or build the bidet function into the toilet itself. The most refined option, and the most expensive.

WASHLET seats retrofit onto a toilet you already own, which makes them the cheapest way into the experience by a wide margin. Check the bowl shape — elongated or round — and confirm there is a grounded outlet within reach behind the toilet.

Before you order: measure the rough-in

Measure from the finished wall to the centre of the closet bolts holding your current toilet down. 12 inches is standard. If you get 10 or 14, you need a toilet made for that dimension — see Toilets with 10-Inch Rough-In. This is the single most common ordering mistake in the category, and it is not fixable after delivery.

Also check the bowl shape you want (elongated is more comfortable, round saves four to five centimetres in a tight room) and, for any electric model, that there is a grounded outlet nearby.

TOTO's ceramic glaze. It is far smoother than standard glaze, so waste and minerals have less to cling to and the bowl needs less cleaning.

One-piece or two-piece?
One-piece has no seam to clean and cannot leak between tank and bowl, but costs more and is heavier. Two-piece is cheaper and easier to install, especially upstairs.
