Bathtubs in Canada

A bathtub is the largest single object in a bathroom and the hardest to change your mind about, because the plumbing, the floor and often the door swing are all built around it. Eunoia carries bathtubs from Maax, Mirolin, Kodaen, Kohler, Cheviot and Produits Neptune, in acrylic, cast iron and stone composite.

The three formats
  • Alcove — fits into a three-walled recess with one finished apron facing out. The standard Canadian bathroom tub, the most space-efficient, and the easiest to combine with a shower. Almost always 60" long.
  • Freestanding — stands clear of the walls as a sculptural object. The reason most people renovate a bathroom. Needs floor space on all sides, a floor-mounted filler or a nearby wall-mount, and a floor that can carry it when full.
  • Drop-in — sits inside a built deck or platform. Gives you a ledge to sit on and set things down, and lets you use a deck-mounted faucet. Takes more floor area than an alcove for the same bathing space.
What to check before you commit
  • Will it get in? Measure the doorways, the stair turn and the landing. A 66" freestanding tub that will not go round the corner is an expensive lesson.
  • Drain location. Left, right or centre. It has to match your existing rough-in or the floor comes up.
  • Filled weight. A large soaker holds several hundred litres. Add the water, the tub and a person, and a second-floor installation may need the joists checked — particularly for cast iron or stone.
  • Overflow and waste kit. Frequently sold separately, and finish-matched to the faucet. Ask before you assume it is included.
Material, briefly

Acrylic is the mainstream choice: light, warm to the touch, holds heat reasonably, repairable if scratched. Cast iron holds heat best and lasts generations, but weighs enough to require structural thought. Solid-surface and stone composites hold heat very well and feel substantial, at a price.

Frequently asked questions

What size is a standard bathtub?
Most alcove tubs are 60" long by 30–32" wide. Freestanding tubs vary far more, commonly 55–72". Measure the space and the route into the room before choosing.

Do I need a special faucet for a freestanding tub?
Usually a floor-mounted tub filler, unless the tub sits close enough to a wall for a wall-mounted faucet to reach over the rim. The floor rough-in must be positioned before the finished floor goes down.

Can I put a freestanding tub upstairs?
Often yes, but check the filled weight against your floor structure — especially for cast iron or stone composite. Acrylic is much lighter and rarely a problem.

Is the drain kit included?
Frequently not. Overflow and waste kits are often sold separately and matched to your faucet finish. Check the product page or ask us.
