Garburators — also called garbage disposals or food waste disposers — from InSinkErator, the company that invented the appliance in 1927.

Horsepower is the number to get right. A 1/3 HP unit such as the Badger 1 handles everyday scraps in a one- or two-person kitchen. Households that cook heavily, or put fibrous vegetable waste through regularly, are better served by 1/2 HP or more.

Two things to check before ordering. Many units ship without a power cord, so confirm whether yours includes one or whether your installation is hard-wired. And the flange has to suit the sink — fireclay and thick stone bowls need an extended flange rather than the standard one supplied.
