Choosing the Perfect One-Piece Toilet for Your Bathroom
In today’s evolving bathroom design landscape, one-piece toilets have become a preferred choice for homeowners seeking both style and practicality. At Eunoia we offer a carefully curated selection that combines modern aesthetics with ease of use and maintenance. If you're considering upgrading your bathroom, a one-piece toilet might be the right fit.
The Appeal of One-Piece Toilets
One-piece toilets are known for their sleek, seamless design. By integrating the tank and bowl into a single unit, they provide a modern, minimalist look while eliminating hard-to-reach spaces. That makes them much easier to clean, which improves the hygiene and upkeep of the whole bathroom.
The design is not only functional but adds a degree of refinement. Whether your bathroom is contemporary or traditional, a one-piece creates a cohesive, uncluttered look.
Why Choose a One-Piece Toilet?
- Aesthetic elegance. A one-piece removes the visual break between tank and bowl, creating a smooth, uninterrupted form.
- Ease of cleaning. No seam between tank and bowl means no crevice for grime to collect — the single most-cited reason people choose one.
- Space efficiency. Many one-piece models have a compact footprint, useful in a powder room, condo or smaller bathroom.
The trade-offs against the alternative are set out in one-piece vs. two-piece toilets.
Key Features to Consider
When shopping for a one-piece toilet, weigh these before anything else:
- Rough-in. Measure from the finished wall to the centre of the bolts at the base of your current toilet. 12" is standard in Canada; 10" and 14" need a toilet built for them. This cannot be corrected after delivery — see toilets with a 10-inch rough-in and our rough-in size guide.
- Skirted vs non-skirted. A skirted one-piece conceals the trapway behind a smooth flat side — cleaner-looking and far easier to wipe down. Non-skirted follows the contour of the trapway; more traditional, more to clean around.
- Flushing system. TOTO’s TORNADO FLUSH uses angled nozzles to generate, in TOTO’s own words, “360 degrees of cleaning power that reaches every spot” — rather than a single rim release. Paired with the CEFIONTECT glaze and a rimless design, which removes the ledge where waste collects, it is the reason these bowls stay clean between cleanings.
- Water spot size. TOTO lists this as a feature in its own right: a larger area of standing water leaves less bare porcelain for anything to cling to. It is the single best predictor of whether a bowl will streak — explained in full in the pros and cons of TOTO toilets.
- Height. Universal Height (roughly 17–17½") is easier for most adults to sit down on and stand up from than Standard Height. Note that several current one-piece models are offered in Universal Height only. See standard or universal height.
- WASHLET+ connection. If you might add a bidet seat later, choose a bowl with the connection built in — TOTO describes it as concealing the WASHLET supply connections for a seamless installation, so the water line runs inside the skirt instead of down the wall. Our guide to WASHLET features covers what the seat actually does.
- Flush volume. Most models are 1.28 GPF. Several are also offered in a 1G version at 1.0 GPF for lower water use.
Brands We Carry
Our one-piece range is led by TOTO, with Duravit and a small selection from Kohler.
- TOTO one-piece toilets — the majority of the collection. Current models include the Ultramax, Aurora, Redington, Nexus and Aquia IV, all pairing TORNADO FLUSH and CEFIONTECT with skirted, WASHLET+-ready designs.
- Duravit — German design, minimalist forms. The Starck 3, D-Neo and DuraStyle ranges, several available with HygieneGlaze.
- Kohler — a small, well-chosen selection rather than a full range. If you are torn between the two names, see TOTO vs. Kohler.
Installation and Maintenance
A one-piece can be a straightforward DIY job with the right tools, though it is heavier than a two-piece and awkward to carry alone — that is the main practical argument for professional installation. One detail that catches people out: on many TOTO models the supply line is sold separately, so check what is in the box before delivery day.
Maintenance is simple: a mild, non-abrasive cleaner. Avoid harsh chemicals and abrasive pads, which damage the glaze that keeps the bowl clean in the first place.
If anything needs servicing later, we stock toilet parts and hardware — fill valves, flappers, seals and trip levers. Parts staying available for years is a large part of why plumbers keep specifying TOTO.
Choosing the Right One for You
Start with the rough-in, then narrow by height and whether you want the WASHLET+ connection. From there it is style and budget.
Compare against the alternatives before deciding: two-piece toilets are cheaper and easier to carry, wall-hung toilets free up floor space — see the practical benefits of wall-hung — and smart toilets build the bidet in. Or browse all toilets.
