What Is Duravit HygieneGlaze? A Cleaner Toilet, Made Easy
Most of the effort of keeping a toilet clean goes into fighting what settles on the surface after the fact. HygieneGlaze is Duravit's attempt to move that fight into the ceramic itself — an antibacterial glaze fired into the bowl at manufacture, working continuously between cleanings.
Here is what it is, what the numbers actually say, and which of our Duravit toilets have it.
What is HygieneGlaze?
HygieneGlaze is a ceramic coating fired into the toilet during production, not applied afterwards. That distinction is the whole point: it is part of the vitreous surface, so it cannot wear off, wash away or be scrubbed through the way a sprayed-on treatment would.
By Duravit's own published figures, it kills 90% of bacteria within 6 hours and 99.999% within 24 hours, tested against E. coli.
How it works
HygieneGlaze relies on the oligodynamic effect — metal ions held in the glaze that disrupt bacterial cell function so the bacteria cannot survive on the surface. It is the same principle behind the long-observed antimicrobial behaviour of silver and copper, engineered into a fired ceramic finish.
In practice that means:
- Less reliance on strong chemical cleaners
- A smoother surface, so waste and limescale have less to grip
- Protection that lasts the life of the fixture rather than the life of a bottle

HygieneGlaze 2.0
HygieneGlaze 2.0 is the current generation. Reformulated ions act faster, and the surface is smoother again, so less sticks to it in the first place. Duravit reports the coating was tested independently at the University of Bonn.
HygieneGlaze Plus
HygieneGlaze Plus uses the same oligodynamic principle with stronger ions, rated at 99.99% of bacteria within 24 hours, and an extra-smooth surface that resists dirt and lime buildup. Duravit's Aurena series, designed by Antonio Citterio, was the first to carry it.

HygieneGlaze is usually a variant option rather than a separate model — on the product page you will see "Glossy White" and "White with HygieneGlaze" as two choices of the same toilet, with the HygieneGlaze version priced a little higher.

Is it worth the difference?
It is a modest premium on a fixture you will own for fifteen or twenty years, and it does not require you to do anything. It matters most where bathrooms are shared and cleaned less often than anyone would like — guest bathrooms, family bathrooms, offices, clinics and care settings.
What it does not do is replace cleaning. It slows what grows between cleanings; it does not remove what you can see.
