Before anything else: measure from the finished wall to the centre of the bolts holding your current toilet to the floor. Twelve inches is standard. Ten and fourteen exist, mostly in older houses, and a 12" toilet will not fit either. If you measure 10", see Toilets with 10-Inch Rough-In.

This is the mistake we see most, and it cannot be fixed after the toilet arrives. Measure before you choose anything else.

• One-piece — tank and bowl moulded as one. No seam to leak or clean around, and a lower profile. More expensive, and heavy to carry.
• Two-piece — separate tank and bowl. Cheaper, far easier to get upstairs, and either half can be replaced later.
• Wall-hung — the bowl floats, with the tank hidden inside the wall. You mop straight underneath, and a small bathroom gains real visual space. Requires an in-wall carrier and an actuator plate, and the wall must be framed for it.
• Smart toilets — integrated bidet functions, heated seat, automatic flush, night light. See also Washlets & Smart Bidet Seats to add those functions to a toilet you already own.
• Standalone bidets and tanks or bowls only, for replacing half a two-piece set.

Elongated bowls are more comfortable and now the default; round saves four to five centimetres of projection, which matters in a powder room where the door swing is tight.

Comfort or universal height seats sit roughly at chair height and are easier to get on and off — worth choosing if anyone in the house has knee or mobility issues, and worth avoiding for a children's bathroom.

On flushing, ignore the marketing and look for two things: a fully glazed trapway (waste has less to catch on) and a well-engineered rim wash. A cheap toilet that needs two flushes uses more water than an efficient one that needs one.

How do I measure toilet rough-in?
From the finished wall to the centre of the closet bolts at the base of your existing toilet. 12" is standard; 10" and 14" require a toilet built for that dimension.

Elongated or round bowl?
Elongated is more comfortable and is the modern default. Round projects four to five centimetres less, which can be the difference in a small powder room or where a door swings close.

What do I need for a wall-hung toilet?
An in-wall carrier and tank, an actuator plate, and a wall framed to take the load. It is a renovation-stage decision, not a straight swap.

Can I add bidet functions to my existing toilet?
Yes — a bidet seat retrofits most standard bowls. Check the bowl shape matches and that there is a grounded outlet behind the toilet.

How are toilets delivered outside Ontario?
By LTL freight on a pallet, with an appointment delivery. Watch for the carrier's call, and inspect the item on arrival.
